Downtown Ladysmith was one of the communities that workshopped the Dynamic Downtowns Workbook to explore how to encourage further revitalization of their downtown.
Members of the downtown business improvement association, local politicians, cultural workers and city staff took part in a 3-hour workshop to explore what was working for the downtown, and what needed to be reconsidered
Outcomes from the workshop included recognition that descriptive rather than prescriptive design guidelines were more effective; centralizing the commercial zoning would create a more complete downtown; and improved infrastructure such as sidewalks were key to encouraging more connection throughout the downtown.
“The Town of Ladysmith was pleased to assist with the testing of this workbook. We believe that it will help other communities in British Columbia understand the value of investing in their heritage as Ladysmith has done and will continue to do.” - Mayor Rob Hutchins, Town of Ladysmith
